Broadband Limits

Unfortunately, not all Broadband providers allow you to have unlimited use of your internet connection. Let me explain that a little. When you use the internet to view web pages, download pictures, music or send and receive emails, you are transferring data from a web server to your PC. This data usage is sometimes limited on a month by month basis. This will obviously be a deciding factor when searching out the best deal for you.

We have compiled this table to give some sort of idea as to what you can expect to be able to do if you have a usage limit. These figures are purely a guide, as each web page, graphic, email etc. are all different in size.

Download Limit (per month) No. of Typical Web Pages* No. of Typical 5-minute songs^
1Gb 10,485 205 (approx. 14 albums)
2Gb 20972 410 (approx. 27 albums)
4Gb 41,950 820 (approx. 55 albums)
8Gb 83,886 1,638 (approx 110 albums)
15Gb 157286 3,072 (approx 205 albums)
32Gb 355,544 6,553 (approx 437 albums)
Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Key: *assuming 100 kilobytes of data   ^assuming a 5 megabyte MP3 file
Note: all figures are approximate, and represent best-case download speeds. Actual speeds will generally be slightly lower.

having said all this, you are not likely to use a hugh amount if you simply view basic web pages. Unless you are a particularly light user, we would suggest you choose a provider that allows more than 1Gb usage. If you look at our Residential Broadband comparison page, you will see that these limits are few and far between. Most people will be OK with about 6Gb but if you do a lot of online gaming or download a lot of music to your iPod, then 15Gb, 30Gb or even better still unlimited will probably be your best choice.
