BBC Not to Fund ISP Network Upgrades

BBC's New iPlayer You might be aware of the new iPlayer function launched recently from the BBC. Since it's introduction, ISP's have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of traffic used by customers, causing capacity problems for some providers.

As a result of this traffic increase, ISP's are having to upgrade their infrastucture to cope with the new demand. Suggestions that the BBC should meet some of this cost have been made. The Chief of Ofcom, Ed Richards has told politicians that he does not believe forcing the BBC to foot the bill is necessarily the best solution.

"It is not necessarily the only way it can happen, and it is not necessarily the way we anticipate it will happen," he said. "I am not convinced that the right answer is to get the BBC to pay for the iPlayer."

He also said that he thinks a better solution was to share the cost between the network operators and the consumer.
